Mobile Subscription in Malta

If you are a fan of warm summers and sandy beaches, then Malta is the place for you. You will have an endless supply of outdoor activities to cool off from a long day at work or studying. Malta is also home to a rich culture and history that will blow your mind if you are into that sort of thing. And what’s more, these luxuries won’t cost you much since it is a fairly low-tax nation. So, don’t let the fact that it is only made up of three islands put you off.

Top on the list of your concerns will probably be how to stay connected in Malta. You are going to need a connection to a mobile service fast. It shouldn’t be a problem though because Malta has advanced infrastructure for mobile phones and the internet. Thus, it won’t be long before you can connect with your family and friends back home. You will soon be able to text your new friends in Malta and make plans for a cool day at the beach.

Mobile Phone Services in Malta

The telecommunication industry in Malta is regulated by the Malta Communications Authority. Most parts of the country are covered by the 4G network therefore, you can stay connected from anywhere. You will also notice that it will be very simple to get a mobile connection in Malta. The task is to choose a provider that meets your needs.

As a new arrival to the country, you can get either a prepaid plan or sign a mobile service contract. Getting a prepaid SIM card is the easiest way to get access to a mobile service. However, I would only recommend it if you are not planning to stay in Malta for long. Mobile services in Malta vary in price from one provider to another depending on the services you subscribe to. They are relatively affordable though as you can get a subscription for as low as 20€ a month.

Mobile Service Providers in Malta

There are three main mobile service providers in Malta; GOMelita, and Epic. Vodafone and RedTouch also offer mobile services in the country. The good news is that all the providers offer relatively inexpensive tariffs. They all offer both prepaid and postpaid options and free calls within the same network. So maybe you might want to find out which network your new friends in Malta are subscribed to.

I should also let you know that you can only find a reliable 4G mobile service from Vodafone. As an expat, you might also find this provider interesting. They have expat-friendly add-ons such as Add Traveler, which significantly reduces the roaming charges, or costs when outside of Malta. You should also explore the ultimate one plan from Melita. It includes 500 free minutes to all countries in EU zone 1 per month. With it you can always call home without worrying about the costs.

GO

GO is one of the largest providers in Malta with the best network coverage. Choosing one provider for mobile, telephone, TV and Internet is the best way to save costs in Malta. Go offers a package that includes all these services. You will further save costs when you choose this provider because it offers free installation to new subscribers. Their fully integrated 4G service will give you access to high internet speeds. So you can comfortably stream your HD videos from anywhere.

They also have a prepaid SIM card that costs €15 with a “SIM starter pack” that includes €5 credit and 1GB data. The standard rates for using their card includes; €0.25 / min (local), €0.05 / SMS (local) and €0.10 / MB of data. Moreover, you will have access to affordable monthly plans that include data, SMS and calls.

Melita

Melita is the most accessible mobile service provider in Malta. Their affordable packages allow you to splurge on your budget. With Melita you can also access a range of mobile, telephone, TV and internet services in Malta. However, their internet speeds are slower than the other networks. So I wouldn’t recommend it if you are looking for fast internet speeds.

They also offer various prepaid plans that include mobile data. The SIM card costs €10. With this card, your standard rates will be €0.24 / min (local), €0.05 / SMS (local). It also has relatively cheap monthly mobile plans for its customers. The one downside to their prepaid SIM card is that it only offers you access to the 3G network. But remember that for all your mobile service packages with this company, you also get data bundles. If you must access 4G or 5G internet then maybe you should go for their contract.

RedTouch

Among the smaller mobile service providers in Malta is RedTouch. The provider relies on Vodafone’s network infrastructure to offer mobile services to its customers. So, it might be more expensive because it buys services from Vodafone, enhances and resells them to consumers. They also offer TV, internet and Landline services in Malta.

Vodafone

Vodafone is an international Telecom company that also operates in Malta. They offer mobile and mobile Internet services throughout the country. It has the best 4G network compared to the other networks. With this provider you are assured of competitive packages since it is the world’s second largest telecommunications company. It owns and operates networks in over 30 countries, with partner networks in 40 additional countries.
